The American Northwest
and Beyond
Hidden in the timeless countryside of the Territorio del Sénia, where Catalonia, the Valencian
Community and Aragón come together in northeastern Spain, scattered groves sheltering
increasingly rare examples of "olivos milenarios", which have been producing fruit for a
thousand years and more, have been cared for by generations of steadfast farmers. Some of
these amazing trees go back to Roman times. A few of the small medieval pueblos have mills
which press the special oil from these venerable trees, which are regarded as the people's
priceless patrimonio. It was a privilege to discover and experience these awe-inspiring
"monumentos vivos" - gnarly otherworldly beings with an ageless presence.
